OVERVIEW SCHEDULE HOMEWORK TO DO BEFORE CLASS

Drawing the moving image from observation and animating it.

Wed Aug 26 - Day 1: Introduction to course and each other. Accessing Carmen for additional course information and handouts. Student questionnaire. Discuss project 1 and related artists. View short films of Stan Brakhage and Jeremy Blake.

 

Mon Aug 31- Day 2: Work in class on project 1.Demos on basic interface and animation in After Effects: scale, position, rotation, opacity and layers. Visit Jennifer Steinkamp's installation at Hopkins Hall Gallery.

Homework 1: go see Jesse McLean's video at the Wexner Center for the Arts. Continuous screenings, but ends on Aug 31.

Homework 2: Create 6 images to use and animate in your first project. At least 1 should be a photoshop file with multiple layers.

Wed Sept 2 - Day 3: Demos on effects, blending modes, shape layers and rendering movies in After Effects. Work in class on project 1. Screening: Takagi Masakatsu

Create an After Effects composition with your shapes animating in 4 ways: scale, position, rotation and opacity. Experiment with at least 6 different effects in After Effect. Continue work on Project 1.
– Mon Sept 7: HOLIDAY, no class –
Wed. Sept 9 - Day 4: In class critique of project 1 - at the start of class you need to put your movie file into the Project 1 folder on the instructor computer. Screening: Virgil Widrich and David Tinnaple.

Finish Project 1 and have it rendered out properly BEFORE class.

 

 

Remix, the reconstruction of reality through sampling, montage, layering, transformations and transitions.

Mon Sept 14 - Discuss project 2, Remix, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose and view related artists/works. Screening: McLean Fahnestock, Omer Fast and Paul Pfeiffer. Demo on Premeire and After Effects integration.

Go see Man With The Movie Camera at the Wexner Center for the Arts tonight at 7pm. Wise to get tickets ahead.

Read the section on Deep Remixability (p 267 - 277) in the Software Takes Command book by Lev Manovich. Write 2 questions or ideas that arise from it. Bring to class for discussion. Download 2 public domain videos for editing demo, try the Prelinger Archive.

Wed Sept 16 - Discuss Creative Commons and copyright. Small group discussions about project approaches and development. Demos on working with video footage, masking, transitions, easing, motion paths, parenting and time stretching in After Effects.

Bring 2 moving image test rendered concepts for project 2 to class for discussion.

 

Mon Sept 21- Audio capture and editing basics, plus working with audio in After Effects. Screening: Clemens Kogler.

Bring your audio and video footage to class to work on.

Wed Sept 23 - Audio keyframing and effects in Premeire. Background rendering using Adobe Media Encoder. In class work on project 2. Be prepared to show me your renders. work on project 2. Bring test renders to class.

Mon Sept 28 - Critique of project 2.

Wed Sept 30- Discuss Project 3 BioPresence - view related artists/works. Bring a video camera to class and organize into field capture groups. Screenings: Catherine Chalmers, Sam Easterson and Pipilloti Rist.

Write a 1 or 2 page artist statement about your completed Remix project. Include your original motivations, inspirations and concepts, how the actual work developed, questions/emotions you hope to raise with the work. Reflect on what you learned from your experience with making the piece, seeing it complete, and feedback you received from others. Turn into Carmen dropbox.

Mon Oct 5 - Demo on rotoscoping. Small group discussions about project approaches and development.

Create at least 4 #AnimalOSU posts. Construct 2 ideas for your next project and be ready to discuss them in class.

Wed Oct 7 - Demo on roto brush tool and the puppet tool in After Effects. Experiment with other effects and techniques useful to your own project. Screening Marina Zurkow and William Kentridge.

Find a good resource link for our class. Could be a good tutorial, reading, artist site... Post it to the Carmen Discussions to share it.

 

Mon Oct 12 - Demo on shooting green screen video in the Digital Union. Removing backgrounds with Keylight in After Effects. Mid-term meetings with instructor.

Work on project 3. Bring at least 2 renders to show the look and feel of the work

Wed Oct 14 - Mid-term meetings with instructor. Viewing resource links. Work on project 3.

Mon Oct 19 - Work on projects. Screening Semiconductor.

Creating your own moving image problem to solve

Wed Oct 28 - Discuss final projects and view student work examples. At 4:30 we will go to the David Rothenberg artist talk at the Wexner Center.

Write a 1 or 2 page artist statement about your completed project. Include your original motivations, inspirations and concepts, how the actual work developed, questions/emotions you hope to raise with the work. Reflect on what you learned from your experience with making the piece, seeing it complete, and feedback you received from others. Turn into Carmen dropbox.

Begin brainstorming ideas for your final project.

Mon Nov 2 - Small focus group discussions on each student's project ideas. Demo on 3D layers and animating a camera in After Effects. Screening: Anne de Vries and Peter Campus.


Come up with 3 concepts to discuss with your group and with the instructor.

Wed Nov 4 In-class presentations of student research projects for final. You must have a visual series of images or a storyboard-like document to present to the class. Screening Valerie Sullivan Fuchs, and Brent Greene.

Prepare for an in-class presentation of your fully-developed project concepts, including presenting your storyboard, inspirations, and examples of imagery/tests/research you have generated for it.Work on your final project.

Mon Nov 16 - Graded Mid-project critique.

Make draft renders of your work and be prepared to present what you have made so far and to ask for feedback from your peers in class.

Wed Nov 18 - In class workday and meetings with instructor. Screening Quayola.

Write a 350 word review/critique about the arts and ideas presented in one of the moving image related events you have attended outside of class this semester. Upload your writing to the Carmen dropbox. Due by Dec 1, but can be turned in any time after you attend the event.

Mon Nov 23 - Draft critique of everyone's finals.

 

Render your final project out for our draft critique. Have it close to complete so we can give comments on refinement of the work.

Mon Dec 7 - Class critique of completed final projects. EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE IN CLASS AND READY TO GO AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS

Render your final project out for critique - plan to do this well before the critique date as it will take longer than you think to get it right.

 

Wed Dec 9 - Exhibition set up day - All artwork must be dropped off between 9:30am and 11:30pm in the Hopkins Hall Gallery. We will likely have a group reel, which will require several volunteers to compile, and set up with a laptop, video projector and audio amplifier. If you want to create a separate moving image installation from the group reel, it must be accepted by the jury first, then, the installation must take place between 2:30 pm and 5pm on this day. Your work must be professionally presented. You will be responsible for bringing what you will need for the installation of your work; tools, hardware, projectors, pedestals, media player etc. Reserve equipment from Classroom Services far in advance to ensure availability. Everyone should expect to help out with the production of the exhibition in some way: clean-up, gallery sitting, the snack organizing or the installation set-up. This show is a group effort.

Upload your movie to Vimeo for jurying. Must be done by noon on Tues Dec 8!

Invite your friends and family to the show!

Thurs Dec 10 - Exhibition Opening Celebration from 5 - 8pm. Invite your friends/family!

Dec 11, 14, 15, 16: Exhibition has open hours 11:00am - 5:00pm. Please be responsible about making sure your artwork is functioning as it should during this time.

Wed Dec 16 - Show take-down is from 5:00 -6:00pm. You are responsible for removing your work. Know that all leftover work will be discarded.

Due on Mon Dec 14: Write a 1.5 to 2 page artist statement about your completed final artwork. Include your original motivations, inspirations and concepts, how the actual work developed, questions/emotions you hope to raise with the work, what you learned from feedback you received and how this final work fits into your artist portfolio.

Upload it to the Carmen dropbox labeled "Statement about completed final".
